Gameplay
What is the object of the game?
Both players start with 50 endurance points. When a player's endurance is reduced to zero or below, the game ends, and the player with the higher endurance total wins. If the game is tied, play continues until the score is no longer tied at the end of a turn.
How many cards can I have in my deck?
Constructed decks must have a minimum of 60 cards, and can contain a maximum of 80 cards. Sealed deck tournament decks are an exception to the minimum rule'these decks can contain as few as 30 cards.
How many cards can I have in my hand?
You start the game with four cards, and you draw two cards each turn. This means that on the first turn, before you play a card, you have six cards in your hand. There is no maximum hand size.
How do resources work?
During your build phase, you get to place one card from your hand into your resource row as a resource. Then, during your recruit step, you get 1 point for each resource you have. You spend resource points to recruit characters and equipment. So typically, you have 1 point to spend on the first turn, 2 on the second, and so on.
Do plot twists and locations use resource points too?
Plot twists and locations work differently from characters and equipment. Plot twists and locations have threshold costs. This means you can play a plot twist or flip a location over for free as long as you have the required number of resources. Because this doesn't actually expend resources, you can flip as many locations and play as many plot twists as you want as long as you have a number of resources in play that is equal to or greater than the cards' threshold costs.
Is there a limit to the number of characters you can have in play?
No, you can have as many characters in play as you want.
Can you have more than one character with the same name in play at the same time?
There are multiple copies of most characters in the game. Under normal circumstances, a player can only have one copy of any given character in play at the same time. (Characters your opponent has in play have no effect on the characters you recruit.) If you recruit a character while another copy of that character is already in play, the copy in play is KO'd when the new copy is recruited. Some plot twists allow you to bring multiple copies of the same character into play, but as a general rule it is not allowed. Character cards in play that have the version "Army" or have the text "[character name] is not unique" are not KO'd when you recruit a character with the same name.
How does damage work?
As previously mentioned, both players start with 50 endurance points. Endurance points are reduced a player receives damage from a character or an effect. There are three ways to deal damage in the game:
Are there ways to win other than reducing your opponent's endurance to zero?
Yes. There are some plot twists and character powers that allow you to win in different ways. Also, in the single-player game, there are some missions that have additional'or alternate'victory conditions.
What happens if you have no more cards in your deck?
When your deck is depleted, you continue play (ignoring the draw each turn) until there is a winner. Running out of cards does not end the game.
Are any cards banned from play?
The answer to this question will be provided shortly.
