Tournaments
How does rank work? Everyone starts with the same rank (750). Your rank increases or decreases every time you play a game in the Rank Zone. Your ranking increase or decrease is based on the ranking of your opponent. For example, defeating an opponent with a higher ranking causes a larger increase in your ranking than would defeating an opponent with a ranking lower than yours. Players are ranked based on a modified version of the ELO ranking system that is commonly used for chess. Players are awarded points for winning matches and points are removed for losing. The number of points added or deducted is proportional to the relative ranks of the two players in the match. A weak player winning against a strong player will be awarded far more points than a strong player that beats a weak player. Likewise, weak players are not penalized heavily for losing to strong players. Tournament ranks are calculated in the same way as those in the Rank Zone. The minimum number of points for any player is 100 points.
Is my individual rank different than my rank in a tournament?
Yes. Every player starts a tournament with the same ranking (750) regardless of his individual rank outside the tournament. Tournament ranks increase and decrease every time you play a game in the tournament, but they do not affect your overall rank outside the tournament.
What happens if I quit a ranked or tournament game before it's over?
If you quit a Rank Zone or tournament game before the game is complete, you lose the match and your opponent is awarded the win. Ranks are adjusted accordingly. Quitting a non-ranked (Practice Zone) game has no effect on your rank.
What happens if I am disconnected during a ranked or tournament game?
If the connection between two players is lost during a Rank Zone or tournament game, the game is counted as a loss for the individual that disconnected. Ranks are adjusted accordingly.
What happens when the game timer runs out?
The game timer is present to keep players from stalling in order to win a game, so dawdling is not tolerated during online play. When the timer runs out without the player either playing an action or passing, the player whose timer ran out loses the game. In a Rank Zone or tournament game, this is counted as an official loss, and both players' ranks are adjusted accordingly.
